High-Speed Connections Available to Every SC School, College, University & State Government Agencies.

Thanks to a partnership between the local telecommunications companies and the state, South Carolina was the first state to connect all of its libraries to the Internet and among the first to connect every school.

High-speed Internet connections are available to every school in SC at discounted prices through the federal E-rate program. Today video services for distance learning and video conferencing are also available. The K-12 Technology Initiative is administered by the SC Division of State Information Technolgy.

South Carolina's Virtual School program is ranked number two in the nation thanks in part to the availability of advanced communications technology.

Large-capacity, commercial-grade connections from South Carolina's companies are also available to the state's technical colleges, major universities, and state government agences through special services provided by the SC Division of State Information Technology.

The state's research institutions are connected with large-capacity broadband facilities to offer high-speed interaction with each other on research projects. They are also connected to the Southern Cross Roads at Georgia Tech. With this connection access is available to all universities within the Southeast.

Telecom facilities are also available for persons with disabilities and home-bound persons thanks again to a state and private partnership via a Telephone Relay Service for the state's hearing impaired and hard of hearing citizens. This unique system provides an around the clock relay call center to provide telephone calling services to and from hearing impaired persons. In a typical call the relay operator reads aloud words typed and transmitted electronically by a deaf person and then immediately transcribes the hearing personŐs spoken response, which appears on the text screen of the deaf caller.

This system, which has been in place for years, is adapting new technology as changes come on board, to provide video relay services in the future.
